Solar power in the electric car

The combination of electromobility and photovoltaics is the logical consequence. This is also referred to as sector coupling. Mobility and buildings merge into one system and can thus benefit significantly from each other through interactions.

Solar-optimised charging of electromobility offers a number of advantages:

  • Environmental friendliness
The most obvious benefit is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Solar-optimised charging makes it possible to charge electric vehicles with clean energy, which helps to reduce the environmental impact of transport.
  • Cost savings
By utilising solar energy, vehicle owners can significantly reduce their energy costs. Investing in a solar system pays off in the medium term.
  • Independence from the energy supplier
With your own solar system, you are less dependent on energy suppliers and rising electricity prices. You produce your own electricity and are less susceptible to power cuts.

And this is how it works

  1. Photovoltaic system
The process begins with the installation of a photovoltaic system on your roof or at another suitable location. This solar system consists of solar cells that convert sunlight into electrical energy.
  2. Inverter / measured value
The direct current generated is passed on to an inverter. This device converts the direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC), which is used in most electric vehicles.
  3. Charging an electric vehicle
When your electric vehicle needs to be charged, the alternating current generated is used directly by the solar system to charge your vehicle’s battery.
  4. Monitoring and control
Modern solar-optimised charging systems such as those from Invisia are often equipped with monitoring and control functions. These make it possible to plan and control the charging process in such a way that the solar energy is optimally utilised. Anyone who has activated the ‘solar-optimised’ function on the charging station will therefore only use their own PV electricity as soon as it is produced.
  5. Efficiency and self-consumption
The key to the success of solar-optimised charging lies in efficiency and self-consumption. Ideally, your electric vehicle should be charged during the day when the sun is shining and the solar system is generating electricity. In this way, you maximise the use of clean and free energy.
  6. Surplus energy
If your solar system generates more energy than your electric vehicle needs, you can use the surplus energy for other purposes in the household, e.g. to run household appliances or a heat pump.

Control with the Invisia app

Whether a single-family home, terraced housing estate, apartment block, complex or commercial building, with the Invisia system, photovoltaics can be optimally matched to the charging requirements and charging processes can be automated.

Conclusion on PV in the car

Solar-optimised charging for electric mobility offers a sustainable and economically attractive way to charge electric vehicles. It reduces the environmental impact, lowers energy costs and offers independence from energy suppliers. However, before deciding in favour of this technology, you should carefully consider the site conditions, battery capacity and financial aspects.
